5 things we can learn about marketing from Mad Men’s Don Draper

It’s 2020 and Netflix is continuously hurling new content at us, but I’m throwing it back to the old Mad Men days with a bit of marketing advice from the King of Advertising himself.

Let’s don that Draper mind-set...


1. Don says: ‘But what is happiness? It’s a moment before you need more happiness.’

What can we learn?

Marketing is always, always about creating and responding to a need (a pain point). You cannot sell to a completely happy and content customer. You need to generate and sustain that need for more.


2.     Don says: ‘Nostalgia - its delicate, but potent. It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone. It goes backwards, and forwards… it takes us to a place where we ache to go again.’

What can we learn?

Nostalgia is a powerful tool. Harness it, and be sure to do it properly. Tap into your brand history, if you can. Be sure to know your audience and market nostalgia appropriately for them. Done well, nostalgia instils feelings of security and trust that will strengthen brand loyalty.


3. Don says: ‘Success comes from standing out, not fitting in.’

What can we learn?

4. Don says: ‘Make it simple, but significant.’

What can we learn?

Often the best ideas are also the simplest. We can apply that to our web design – aiding customer navigation on our sites needs to be kept as clear and as simple as possible. What can we learn?
